Joshua

Joshua maanged to swan dive from a levetated area on to his head, Kabooom !!!
Damages caused : Joshua ears, head and nose brused.
Cement and brick zero damage. Remind me to tell Joshua that it;s not the place to learn how to dive.

Ubuntu

So working your way through distrubutions might be fun. I myself spend countless hours through sleepless nights to get things up and running. Working in Suse, DEbian, Fedore core, Centos, Red Hat, and latly Ubuntu.
Ubuntu caught my eye, when I saw the nice "candy" display. It installed on my laptop (Siemens Amilo 2GH, 1Gig Ram, 80 Gig drive with no problems what so ever. It has a wonderfull feel to it, very fast, and it's apt-get, yum and smartd tools work very well from the caommand line right up the X.

I can reccomned it to everyone. I even tried ASTERISK under it, in a VMWARE session, working with a WiFi connection through a SIP ISP and it was happy enough to make the call and have good quality voice. Athough the SIP packet was rated at 20+K it was still happy on the DSL.

I tried a number of programs on it, and things like wifi-radar, freemind, Automatix, NetGo and a number of others come to mind ... O yeah ..check out Vtiger, eGroupware, LinNeighbourhood, Journyx time sheets, and Knowledgtree. Excellent apps. Thanks to everyone that contributed and made these things possible, oh yeah ...and the boys from openoffice ... Yeah Ha to you tooooooooo !!

Till later

Falko

His name just keeps on popping up everywhere. http://www.falkotimme.com/

Check out his web site, and READ READ READ !!!!

Cymphonix

"Fly you fools .. Fly !! "

Every network either had them or is still at this point hogged with stupid files that cause bandwidth issues.
Be it Spyware, SPAM, Virus and/or trojant. They excist, and to get rid of it ...is a admin nightmare. Just when you think you stop it here, it pops it's ugly head over there ...

Up steps Cymphonic. What a lovly product. It gets right to the point, geenrates those fancy reports in HUMAN readible format, and does it quick!! The price is right and for hear me out Administrators. You found a new buddy !!

There is a lot of these products out there already, however not a lot of them give you what you get in the Cymphonix product. Check out the web site, there's an online demo too.

UPDATE at LAST

So

It's been like 7 months ago, since the last update. And My appologies to those who's been reading, by not receiving some new news. A quick update....

Thieves broke into my house, killed my dogs, stole my car, and made my life misearable the last couple of months.
Ouch !!

I miss my dog. Her name was Keena, and she was an Alaskan Malamute. Beautiful dog, and what a shame to loose her. We would do almost anything together. Needsless to say .. I missed her ...

In everyones life, comes a special person I was told once. I can say this.

To my wife.
My babes, thank you for being that special person in my life. For standing next to me during everything we took head on, and made a huge success. My dreams, and life would not have been the same without you by my side.
May everyone in this world be as lucky as I am, by meeting and sharing their life, with a special person like you are to me.
I love you for what you are. your insight. Your passion for livng, and specialy the moments you take in raising our child. Joshua. What a beautiful boy. Your knowledge that you share is mind blowing, and your patience with me, is unasked for, yet much appreciated. I love you for who you are, and what you mean in my life.

I will always love you, from that first moment, to the very last. Even when I am not there anymore, please understand that my words and my heart will be with you, always.

Good week

So .. It's been a good week.
For those around me ... They'll understand .. for those who we left behind ... It's been not so a good week...

Hehe

PS: Note to one self. Honestly is still the best policy ... It pays well ... ;0)

Servers

So I promised I will not go and support service applications again. BUT now that I do it for myself. Hell ... why not set some speed records. So Here's one...

Build a MS 2003 E Server. Loaded all the bells and whisltes, DNS SMTP, POP, SNMP, .NET, IIS, and then MailMarshall to see how the new one looks like .. Heck what a nice tool.. Got everything up and working in half a day ... through the DSL .. filters and customize to Moa's prefrences ...
Not bad I think ... since I touched the stuff almost a year ago ... While doing a netware to ADS migration .. for the rest of the country ... yep .. all 40 or so servers ...

anycase .. still have it in me .. so I let it go ...

On games

Not a bad site, actualy setup a RSS feed to it, to keep up with the jones's. =;0)
Ok. So had some time on my hands the last couple of days. Made me install some new and old games. Kinda enjoyd playing UT2004 again. (On the Shiny new Laptop) WOW .. Go Radeon 9700..
So I finished it in a couple of days. Yes I did cheat. Yes I did won. =][-]
So I tried Half-Life 2 again, Still rate this game with the AI in it .. Damn the last CD .. It scratched .. So no Half Life ..Went back to C&C: generals .. Kill Kill Kill .. Got bored.

Next one up was Halo. (The M$ Saga) what a stupid game .. I should look into Halo2 .. (Not in the near future, after whatI saw). Reloaded Doom3 .. Damn man .. Now this is one scary game ...
I even convinced myself that there is someone in the garden and got a bat out to go look. I think the Dog got a fright of it's life ... hence from now on forth .. She will sleap inside.. To serve and Protect.

Pandara Tomorrow, failed on the First disk .. DAMN DAMN DAMN !!! Will have to get it again.

Anyone out there for a good suggestion on some VERY VERY kewl games, that is REALY worth playing .. ? Make a list ... Send it quickly !!

General

Note to oneself: Asterisk is kewl.

Started my own company, with a couple of very bright individuals. (Wish one could upload files to this BLOG, who knows .. I might be hosting my own soon.)
Couple of good books I found on the iNET. Anycase need to get my head around Asterisk .. there is such a lot to learn. Wish I had a digium card to play with.

Joshua is cute and doing very well. Running around after anyting, and if it has wheels, it needs to be touched, tasted, and stress tested. How my kingdom survives it, it is a good question.

Wifie started to complain that I use the Laptop too much, but heck .. It is such a nice device that I just want ... well I 'll write a small e-mail to siemens.

Started to play some games again. Unreal -- WOW .. Doom3 ---Dubble WOW... If I can just get my hands on Half Life 2 .. or better yet . the upcoming add on pack !! DAMN !!

ALSA seemed to work by default

This laptop is operating under Kernel version 2.6.9-1.667

Basic Installation of Fedore Core 3:

  • Always had my hands on RedHat, switched to FC3 because exim, spamassassin, vtiger (sugarCRM), and apache seemed to install easier, after I got apt-get util for FC3
  • In south Africa the FC3 or any other Distribution can be downloaded from here. ftp://ftp.is.co.za/linux/distributions/
  • I have managed to install it with out any issues, but thought I’d be brave and see how it performs under a VMWARE session, using VMWARE ver 5. The installation had no issues, and X seemed to be fine too, under a 1200x800 display. One thing that bugged me though was the “blurry” resolution under this screen resolution, but dropping it to 1024x768 seems fine. Very crisp and quick in response.
  • There was no Post modifications needed. Other than making sure the VMWARE sessions was configured with a 10Gig HDD and 384Mb Memory (512MB is so much faster /better)

Setting up additional features for [Linux Distribution]

  • There seems to be no issues that I could find, with suspend to disk
  • No touch Pad or mouse issues.
  • Asterisk VoIP soft PABX was a breeze and I managed to make a call, within an hour from installation. Using a soft phone from http://www.xten.com

Unresolved issues

  • Switching to higher resolution than 1200x800 with 32 bit depth was a challenge, I think it’s because the VIRTAUL desktop becomes to big, and scrlling left and right all the time to get where you want is not ideal

Configuration Files

  • No configuration files where modified to get FC3 on the laptop

More Specific Information. Specific stuff such as:

  • lspci
  • anything else you feel is relevant or may be useful

Walking

Joshua started to walk 3 days ago ... Very Impressive .. on 9months old .. very nice...

Counting eggs before the chicken hatched ? Hu ?

My one friend and I got to talk earlier today, around these so called high profile penguine suit i-am-to-good-for-anything directorship dickhead (i-realy-need-your-help) idiots that steer companies to their doom, while guys like us, dive in and direct the rudder to make sure we don't miss the port.

Anycase I left my comments with "these are typical people that count their chickens, when they don't even have the chicken to breed in the first place"
Ever found that you just can;t get through to these types of people. ?

Today is the day, that we might just see a better future

Radware / Badware

Radware: A device that helps, when BGP is an issue, and you just can't get yourself to load balance those multi-homing lines.
Badware: When the Radware device just can;t get itself to do what you want it to do ...

Ok ok ... So overall it's a very good device. It works, with a touch of complexity ...
It load balances probably everything that you want, web pages, lines, firewalls, even does some fancy IDP stuff.
We running it internally to Load balance between our DSL and IS line. Works very well.

Yet to see anyone setup a multihomed, perfectly balanced line, within seconds, using BGP ...

Asterix VoIP

Another week, another load of problems behind me, and what a lurning curve this week was.
So to get right to it. Asterisk Rule !

We have managed to setup not one, or two software PABX's BUT yes 3, and impressivly one is running on my everyday, day-to-day small little laptop. Incredible.

Managed to get VoIP running between our branches, using GSM connectivity. Also bought the G.729a Codec, and at this time activly bussy to get it up and runnning.
Also went for the SNOM 190 Phones. Looks good, does what it needs to. No problem.
Quickly configured the Voicemail (including sending it to my INBOX if i'm not in the office) and have some thumping tunes for the music on hold funtion.

No more money to the Monopoly player in the market. Whoo hooo

A packeteer sniffing device is helping with the QoS, and hopefully soon with the compression too. Nifty little device, that every IT organization should invest in. Period !!

Go VoIP !

It's been a struggle, and it took a lot of explainations. (Personally I think a black board and cryons would have done it) BUT the company has agreed to go with Thrusters burning red hot, to go the VoIP route. WhooHoo.
So here is the just of it.

We recently stumbled upon the OpenVoice guys. What a lovly bunch of people. They are so helpfull and always willing to go the extra mile. We enroled in some quick trianing to get the bases up and running and then the good news.
We are going to implemet the VoIP solution from them, when moving into the new building at the end of this month.
I was pleasantly surprised to see that their web (http://www.openvoice.co.za) site contain some very nice in depth articles as to what they support, and interesing solutions, that would benefit us, when moving into the new building.

So ok .. Step 2 ... The VPN tunnels from the regions via DSL, using Juniper ...
I'll keep you guys posted.

Open-IT

It's been over a month now that I have converted from the dreaded M$ Operating system. In this month alone I have probably done what every Opensource techie has done many many times.
I recompiled kernels, compilers, scripts, and programs. Over 75 different ones each with new challenges. I have build most of the main distributions on Linux, including FreeBSD, RedHat, Suse, Slackware, Debian, Knoppix and Impi. Gone through ours of installations, questions, troubleshooting, and still I find the challenges fun, eciting and worth every second. Every second spend away from that expensive alternitive (M$)

Yesterday we all got very excited in building our first Opensource Software PABX, based on Asterisk. We quickly expanded to our other office, to try and get that up. It wotked !! No more payments to the local Monopoly was in our grasp. Now we just need to refine it.

I'm not missing M$ at all ...

Profile

So a couple of weeks ago, I managed to get talked into participating in these Personality Profily thingies. Surprisngly it was very acurate and won my vote to be published...
So here is what people think of me ...

Very verbal, animated and stimulating communicator, poised and capable of projecting enthusiasm and warmth.A fluent, lively, forceful talker,he is able to sell ideas with assurance and intensity.
He has a strong sense of urgency, initiative and competitive drive to get things done, with emphasis on working with and through people in the process. He understands people well and uses that understanding effectively in persuading others to do willingly what he wants them to do.
Impatient for results,Morne is a confident and ambitious 'doer' and decision-maker,a self-starter who can delegate responsibility and authority when necessary.Having a distinctly low level of interest in details which are not pertinent to his goals,he will delegate them freely, relying on persuasion, rather than close follow-up,to assure completion of such work.Venturesome and rather freewheeling, he is uninhibited in expressing and acting on his own ideas, which he will do without very much concern for traditional, established policies.Skillful at 'selling' his ideas to others,he is also determined and persistent in expressing and acting on them.
At ease and self-assured with groups or in making new contacts,he is gregarious and extroverted, has a compelling impact on people, and is always selling in a general sense. He learns and reacts quickly and functions at a faster-than-average pace.Able to adapt quickly to change and variety in his work,he will become impatient and less effective if required to work with repetitive routines and details or to do structured work under close supervision.
MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES
To maximize his effectiveness, productivity, and job satisfaction, consider providing him with the following:
High levels of independence, autonomy and flexibility in his activities
Opportunities for involvement and interaction with people
Freedom from repetitive routines and details in work which provides variety and change of pace
Opportunities to learn and advance, with recognition and reward for communications and leadership skills demonstrated
Social and status recognition as rewards for achievement
Repeated exposure to general company policies, standards, values and disciplines will be important in his development.

Unbelievable hey ?
